The Commonwealth Park, Gibraltar
Lotus Design Studio has been commissioned to design a first public park by the government of Gibraltar via Landform Consultants in the UK in 2012.
The former car park (2.5 acres) has been transformed into a soft, green and highly sustainable world-class park within the heart of town. The landscape includes Mediterranean style ornamental planting beds, 143 trees, a large area of grass, water fountains, grass mounds, permeable paved pathways, an artificial lake, a bridge, sculptures, and a contemporary bandstand.
The location of the park, juxtaposed against the buildings, emphasises the importance of the city-park relationship. The park is an important visual axis connecting the port area and Queensway to the city.
The park has been opened to the public by the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo in 2014 and awarded by ‘Best International Project’ by Plant Magazine in 2016. This natural and interactive park in the heart of Gibraltar, which is flexible in use, changes from season to season to become an inspiring and cutting edge public green space.
